A mold may be able to grow in an electrolyte solution due to specific
physiological/metabolic capabilities and not make the transition to grow in
standard fungal growth media.

I agree with our colleagues that staining with lactophenol cotton blue
and/or examining with a wet mount is a good first step in your investigation
