In addition to Chris’ good point and if an apparent fungus, suggest you consider a xerophilic fungus such as Wallemia.

Have you done a microscopic evaluation of the mass?  Also, have you tried any stains such as lactophenol blue?

Subject: [PMFLIST] Isolation of stressed fungal cultures from electrolyte drink

[Use CAUTION when opening links/attachments]

Dear All,

I work in a product testing company. Recently we received a complaint sample of electrolyte solution product (pH around 7) showing white mass as contaminant. It is assumed to be a fungal contaminant. We did the necessary TYMC using SDA, SCA, PDA plate, even removed the cottony mass and placed it on the agar plate. However even on incubating for more than 7 days we did not observe any growth.

We assume that since the fungal mass was in high salt solution for a long time maybe the fungal growth was stressed and so failed to grow in the recommended media. Can anyone suggest how to overcome this? We need to grow the fungus to identify it. Is there any media that will help us to recover stressed fungus so that it can grow  in the recommended media. Kindly guide us.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Regards,

Megha Goyal
