Rosemarie,

Try using USP Fluid D and shaking for 15 minutes (mechanical arm shaker).
We have seen recoveries up to 95% using this method.  Another option is to
remove the spores with an alginate swab (the swab goes into Fluid D) and
follow up with a shake as described above.  Make a few serial dilutions,
plate and voila!
