Dear Lubaina,

      The use of Sulphuryl compounds (e.g. cysteine, thioglycollate
thiosulfate and metabisulfite) in a microbial count diluent  or enrichment
broth will be able to neutralize the antimicrobial activity of Bronopol.
However, you should be aware that it has been reported in the literature
that Sodium thiosulfate has been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of
Staphylococci.  In addition, Sodium thioglycollate has been demonstrated to
be inhibitory against S. aureus, Ps. aeruginosa and spores.  The use of
glucose in conjunction with Sodium thioglycollate will reduce the
inhibitory activity of thioglycollate.  Before performing challenge
testing, you will need to validate whatever neutralizing agent that you are
using to recover microorganisms from a formulation containing Bronopol is
not inhibitory.

Thanks for the reply. Did you have a chance to work with bronopol as a
preservative and how do you neutralize the formulation.

Lubaina,
yes, I recently did a challenge test of gluconolactone/sodium benzoate,
but it was in a lotion. It did work well, decreasing counts to much less
than 90% in 7 days. I don't know how it would work with the fabric.

Hi Cindy:

Have you done challenge testing using this preservative system.   We
would like to use in the wet wipes for but not sure how it will behave
with fabric.  If you have any data please share with us.

I am looking at some cosmetic preservatives and see gluconolactone and
sodium benzoate (Geogard): the mode of action is said to be 'hurdle
technology' where a more hostile environment is created. Can someone
explain this mode of action further or point me to a site?
