Dear Bab,

It is much more efficient and cost effective to obtain QC strains from companies that manufacture microbial isolates that are traceable to reference strains, and it avoids having to store frozen aliquots of microorganisms at -50C or less, which requires an expensive ultra freezer. Normally, you can only store microorganisms on agar slants or plates for up to one month in the refrigerator, depending on the isolate and the storage conditions (i.e. humidity, temperature fluctuations, etc.). However, storing broth cultures can be a problem because you cannot detect contamination until you subculture the isolate. As you may know, the USP requires that the number of passages (subcultures) be limited to 5 or less.

To make things easy, bioMérieux offers BioBall®, which contains a precise number of microorganisms in a water soluble ball that delivers unprecedented accuracy for Quantitative Microbiological Quality Control. BioBall is easy to use and requires no preparation or pre-incubation. It can be added directly to media or matrix samples. BioBall is an accredited reference material under ISO Guide 34 standard. For more information you can visit www.biomerieux-usa.com/bioball.

bioMérieux also offers LyfoCults® Plus, which are easy to rehydrate and use, ATCC-derived organism strains that are used in clinical, biopharmaceutical, food, and water testing industries. LyfoCults® Plus are individually lyophilized quality control microorganisms derived from ATCC® cultures. The format is glass-free and offers immediate hydration without pre-incubation in a unique all-in-one system that stores and hydrates the freeze-dried microorganisms. LyfoCults Plus vials also contain a built-in inoculation wand to streak the desired culture media so no additional materials are needed. More information can be obtained at www.biomerieux.com/lyfocults.

For both of the these products, bioMérieux provides Certificates of Quality that include strain identification and reference number, lot number, expiration date, and number of passages from the original reference strain.

Sincerely,
James T. Tanabe M (ASCP) || bioMérieux, Inc. || Application Specialist
